Paper the cracks, paper the cracks, paper the cracks…I’ve never rooted for the Arsenal to lose a match but I have to wonder if a defeat at Udinese on Wednesday would be the best thing for the club in the long term. For 6 years Arsene Wenger has told us his young side is close to winning silverware but the club clearly lacks the mental strength and experience that championship sides have. It’s blindlingly obvious that the central defence is too small, lightweight, and injury-prone, Alex Song alone is insufficient as defensive midfielder, and Robin Van Persie needs some quality help up front. Yet the club continues to buy teenagers or small, creative Frenchmen or Africans that can’t compete with the power and tenaciousness of Europe’s elite when the pressure is on.
Nasri wants out, so let him go. If the club gets knocked out of the Champions League on Wednesday, Nasri will surely go and good riddance. Maybe missing out on that boatload of cash will perversely be the catalyst for Arsenal to spend on the players it genuinely needs – 2 new defenders, and defensive midfielder, and another true striker. This lot will continue to flatter to deceive. It’s not a total rebuild job at the Emirates but it’s certainly time to reload if the future is to hold anything other than 4th place finishes and more empty seats in the world’s most expensive football ground.
